The Word: John 4:27-38
27 Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” 28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” 30 They went out of the town and were coming to him.
31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. 36 Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. 37 For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.” (ESV)
Jesus had just revealed himself to be the Messiah to the Samaritan woman. The bewildered woman ran to her village and called everyone to see for themselves if Messiah is at the edge of their village. His own disciples were also confused. They were thinking how come Jesus was talking to a Samaritan woman. Jesus was all about His father’s business. He was busy telling the good news of the Kingdom of God to the people and drew them to himself. For Jesus, doing the will of His heavenly Father was the food. For him, doing the will of His father was as fundamental as eating food for survival. Jesus, lifts the veil before the eyes and make his disciples focus on the eternal kingdom. He was talking about team work between the ‘sower and reaper’ to gather all kinds of people in to the eternal kingdom.
Application: We are called to introduce the Good News of Jesus. There are so many people who are eager and willing to listen to God’s redemption story. Everyone has their part. Some sow and some reap, one is not greater than the other; rather, both are doing the job assigned for them and thereby doing the will of the Father. It is a teamwork. God cares about everyone including the unworthy.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank you Lord for this day. Thanks for your work in all of our lives and thanks for caring for all of us. Help us to focus on what is important in your sight. Help us to do our part faithfully in harvesting souls for you. In Jesus Name. Amen.
